There’s no better time to get your digital life in order than the fresh start of a new year. We know that online security may not have been at the top your list of new year’s resolutions, but it should be.

Online safety is critical in today’s digital world, and there are more security breaches, hacks, and cyber-attacks happening now than ever before simply because we’re bad at passwords. Bad at remembering them, creating them and managing them. Yet, passwords remain the primary way in which we protect our sensitive information and prove we are who we say we are online. We’re guessing that perhaps your online banking accounts, social media profiles, children’s report cards, insurance and credit card information (to name a few) are all flashing through your mind right now. That’s why we’re here to remind you that with all the cyber uncertainty, there is no better time than now to beef up those passwords.

Here at Intel Security, we know that internet safety can get a little daunting, and that’s why we’re here to help you get your security straight. Don’t know where to start? You’re in luck! We’ve laid out a few easy steps to get your security in check.

1. Get a password manager.

We may be biased, but using a password manager can give you a running head-start and get you halfway to safety with little effort on your part. The True Key app can make it easy by generating long, strong and unique passwords for all your accounts. It can remember all your passwords and save you time while you browse the web by automatically filling in your passwords for you. Start by downloading the True Key app for free.

2. Securely gather all your passwords in your True Key profile.

Storing your passwords in your browser may be easy and convenient, but it’s also dicey. Anyone who has access to your computer could potentially get their hands on your online accounts as well. Not to mention, many browsers don’t bother encrypting the passwords that are saved, meaning anyone may be able to see them in plain text and get hold of them. Rather than playing roulette with your private data, you can use the True Key import feature to securely add passwords to your profile, and remove them from your browsing history. The True Key app can clean up that password trail publicly available within your browser and securely encrypt your information.

The best part is that it’s easy to import passwords from your browser into your True Key profile! You just open your desktop app, click on the “Settings” icon in the top right-hand corner next to your name, click on “Import” in the top right-hand corner, then you’ll be prompted to check for passwords saved in your selected browser. That’s all there is to it!

3. Update your mobile app passwords.

Mobile app passwords are often, understandably, neglected. You used it once to log in but then never typed it again. It’s crucial to have strong and unique passwords protecting your apps, particularly because they are often linked to online accounts. If you download your apps to a new phone or device, you want to make sure those passwords will protect your personal data. Pro tip: The True Key app can instantly log you into popular Android and iOS apps.

4. Layer up that Login!

Some websites and apps require additional safety measures to log in. It could be a secure PIN, a notification sent to your phone, or even attributes unique to you like your face or fingerprint, like with the True Key app. Turning on multi-factor authentication lets you double (or triple) up on protection for your accounts, meaning you can use a combination of your one-of-a-kind features, personal devices or even a Master Password to prove it’s you when logging in. You can learn more about MFA here.

Now is the perfect time to ditch the bad password hygiene! We hope 2017 will be your best – and most secure - year yet! If you don’t yet have the True Key app, don’t forget to download it and get the mobile app for Android and iOS.
